Stop The Shame: Having Cosmetic Surgery Is Not Embarrassing

When people imagine someone who has had plastic surgery, too many times the image of a woman with a stretched face and too round, pushed up breasts appears. Many women who long for a positive body change won’t even step into the doors of a surgeon’s office because they fear they will be seen as too vain, lacking character, having the wrong priorities, and superficial.

Why do we gossip about cosmetic surgery so much? Why does the stigma that surrounds cosmetic procedures still exist?

Aesthetic plastic surgery involves techniques intended for the “enhancement” of appearance through surgical and medical techniques. Cosmetic surgery is specifically concerned with maintaining normal appearance, restoring it, or enhancing it beyond the average level. Is there really something so wrong about that?

Cosmetic surgery should not feel like a secret people need to keep.</h2

While many may not be talking about it, cosmetic surgery is continually becoming more popular over the years. In 2015, nearly 16 million cosmetic procedures were performed in the United States alone. This is a two percent increase over 2014. The top five cosmetic procedures of 2015 were: breast augmentation, liposuction, nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, and tummy tuck. Even the Europeans are following the trend! Europe has the second largest market for cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic surgery is very common in countries such as the United Kingdom, France, and Germany.

Plastic surgery is a personal decision and every year millions of people decide to have cosmetic procedures. There is no reason for you to feel embarrassed if you decided to do the same, or to feel like you have to justify your decision to anyone else.

As with almost everything, there is never going to be an agreed upon opinion when it comes to plastic surgery.
