Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
Abdominal Contouring Surgery
Having a child or losing a large amount of weight are huge accomplishments—but the excess skin left behind can sometimes get in the way of feeling confident in your appearance. Diet and exercise can only go so far in reshaping your midsection and cannot completely improve outstretched muscles or skin. Fortunately, the tummy tuck allows both women and men to achieve the flat, well-contoured abdomen they desire.
Tampa board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Castor performs the tummy tuck to help tighten the abdominal skin and restore the underlying muscles. This surgery, which is also referred to as abdominoplasty, can help to dramatically reshape the midsection for a slimmer, more youthful figure.
Is a Tummy Tuck Right for Me?
When women go through one or multiple pregnancies, or someone loses a large amount of weight after struggling with obesity, they are often left with sagging skin around the abdomen and outstretched muscles. While excess body fat can be lost with an effective diet and exercise program, once the skin loses its elasticity, it will need surgery to regain a taut and firm appearance. The underlying muscles will also need to be restored to provide a stronger foundation and flat contour.
A tummy tuck is not intended to help you get rid of stubborn fat around the abdomen. While it may help to reduce a small amount, Dr. Castor may recommend liposuction if there are more than a few pounds of fat you want eliminated. He performs liposuction in combination with a tummy tuck for many of his patients.
How is a Tummy Tuck Performed?
Dr. Castor will discuss your tummy tuck in detail during your consultation. He will carefully listen to what it is you are looking to achieve, and will work with you to come up with a customized treatment plan to provide you with the best possible, and most natural looking results.
Your tummy tuck will consist of a horizontal incision that extends from about hipbone to hipbone, a few inches beneath your belly button. Some patients may be right for a mini tummy tuck, which uses a smaller incision. Dr. Castor will then cinch together and repair any damage to the abdominal muscles. He will then remove any excess tissue and can treat areas of stubborn fat using liposuction. The skin is then pulled tight back over the abdomen and Dr. Castor will remove any extra before closing your incisions.
It is important to remember that you will have a permanent scar following your tummy tuck. However, it will fade and flatten over time and can be easily hidden under most pairs of underwear or even your bikini bottoms. As many of our patients say, they would rather have a faint scar than the hanging skin.
