Your Guide to Laser Hair Removal

Woman feeling her underarm skin after laser hair reductionLaser hair removal is a common cosmetic procedure in the United States. In fact, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, laser hair removal was in the Top 5 minimally invasive cosmetic procedures in 2017, with more than 1 million such procedures performed by ASPS surgeons alone. Many millions more were completed by other specialists. Choosing the practice of a board-certified plastic surgeon means you are choosing a practitioner with extensive experience, training and education focused in aesthetic services and surgery.

At Artisan Aesthetics Plastic Surgery & Laser Center in Tampa, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Stan Castor is proud to include hair removal among his laser services at our elegant, state-of-the-art practice. To arrange a consultation, please call our staff at 813-971-2000.

What is Laser Hair Removal?

This minimally invasive treatment offers lasting hair reduction. Say goodbye to razors, electrolysis and waxing. Benefits include:

  • Smooth, silky skin
  • Minimal to no discomfort
  • Treats large or small areas
  • No downtime
  • Gentle
  • Safe and effective

Imagine throwing on a sun dress or tank top without having to shave first! In warm, sunny Florida, laser hair removal provides noticeable benefits year-round.

The laser device can be used on many areas of the physique, such as:

  • Face
  • Legs
  • Bikini area
  • Back
  • Arms
  • Neck

Laser hair removal may be the perfect option if you are looking for an alternative to waxing, shaving or electrolysis. It’s a good option for people who want to remove unwanted hair, and who want to feel confident in a wide variety of clothing while looking great, too.

Candidates for this Laser Treatment

Just about anyone who wants to reduce unwanted hair on their face or body is a good candidate for laser hair removal. The device used at our practice works for:

  • All skin types
  • All hair types
  • Most hair colors
  • Tanned skin

Certain hair colors and skin tones respond differently to laser treatment, based on how the pigment of your hair absorbs the laser energy. Rely on Dr. Castor to make sure you are a good candidate and to recommend alternatives when necessary.

The Procedure

You’ll visit our practice for the laser session and then get back to your day. No downtime necessary! The device emits pulses of laser light rapidly and painlessly. Dr. Castor may recommend multiple treatment sessions, spaced several weeks apart. Multiple treatments are typically required to get lasting hair reduction.

Laser hair removal works by heating up and thereby damaging individual hair follicles. Afterward, the follicle won’t produce hair. Because the laser targets the roots of hair, we’ll let you know how many weeks before your appointment you’ll need to cease plucking, waxing and electrolysis, so that the root is present at the time of treatment.

It’ll take 1-3 weeks for the treated hair to fall out. Although you will notice a reduction in hair after the initial treatment, the results get better and better with each session. You should also avoid sun exposure during this time, and be sure to wear sunscreen outside, to get the best possible results.
