What Is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a cosmetic service that can improve the appearance of your face, neck, or hands. Moreover, a chemical solution containing acids or enzymes is applied to remove dead cells, which lift away during treatment or gradually peel off. Once this happens, healthy new skin cells rise to the surface.

Chemical peels also improve the absorption of skincare products by removing the barrier of damaged cells. Eventually, these treatments can increase the effectiveness of your at-home regimen. Chemical peels may be combined with SkinPen Microneedling for optimal results.

How Do I Prepare for a Chemical Peel?

Before you get a chemical peel, you will need to clean your skin and remove any makeup or other products that you may be wearing. You will also need to avoid sun exposure for at least two weeks before your procedure. When you check in with our front office team for your chemical peel, we will ask several pertinent questions to ensure you are properly prepared for the appointment or if you need to reschedule.

During a chemical peel, your provider will apply a solution to your skin. This solution will cause your skin to peel off in layers. The number of layers peeled off will depend on the type of chemical peel you get.

Safe, Precise, and Personalized

What Is the Chemical Peel Procedure Like?

Your appointment begins with a thorough cleansing of your skin to remove any oils, ensuring the treatment can penetrate evenly. Your provider then carefully applies your chosen SkinMedica® peeling solution. You may feel a brief sensation of heat or a tingling as the active ingredients begin to work, but this typically subsides quickly. The application is precise and methodical. The solution remains on your skin for a specific amount of time, tailored to your unique sensitivity and goals.

Once the peel has reached its intended depth, a neutralizing agent or a soothing finishing product is applied to calm the skin. Unlike more aggressive treatments, Skin Medica peels are designed to provide predictable results with manageable downtime. You will leave the office with a clear set of instructions for hydration and sun protection.

What Treatment Areas Can a Chemical Peel Address?

Chemical peels are most commonly utilized on the face to address aging and acne, but they are also highly effective on the neck, chest (décolletage), and hands. These areas are often the first to show signs of sun damage and "liver spots," making them ideal targets for chemical resurfacing.

Am I a Candidate for a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels are versatile and can be tailored for almost any skin tone (Fitzpatrick scale I-VI). You are an ideal candidate if you are bothered by dullness, active acne, or early signs of aging.

Who should wait?

Those with active cold sores, sunburns, or open wounds in the treatment area should delay their peel. If you have used Accutane within the last six months or are pregnant, please consult with our team for a modified, pregnancy-safe facial alternative.

What to Expect After a Chemical Peel

Chemical Peel Recovery

Depending on the type of chemical peel, you may experience mild skin reactions as your skin goes through the renewal process. Certain formulas may cause peeling, redness, or swelling. Patches of discoloration may appear more pronounced as they rise to the surface before revealing new skin. These reactions are normal, requiring only manageable aftercare and, in some cases, a small amount of social downtime.

The Post-Peel Glow

Chemical Peel Results

Several days to weeks after your peel, you should notice a visible change in your skin's appearance. The texture will likely be smoother, and the concerns targeted during treatment will look less pronounced. Results from a chemical peel are relatively long-lasting, though patients tend to achieve the greatest benefit by scheduling follow-up sessions. While one treatment will provide noticeable improvements, especially with a more aggressive chemical peel, milder or more superficial chemical peels may require several treatment sessions over time to get similar results.

Talking with our expert team at Artisan Aesthetics Plastic Surgery is the best way to determine the type of chemical peel needed to achieve the results you desire and to plan for additional sessions, if needed.

Revitalize Your Skin with a Professional Chemical Peel in Tampa, Florida

Call (813) 971-2000 today to schedule your chemical peel consultation in Tampa and start your journey to smoother, revitalized skin.

Chemical Peel Frequently Asked Questions

With a SkinMedica Vitalize Peel, you may experience light flaking starting around day 48–72 and lasting for about 2–3 days. With deeper TCA peels, the peeling process is more significant and can last 5–7 days. It is crucial not to pick or pull at the skin; let it shed naturally.

Actually, the opposite is true. While the peel removes the dead top layer, it stimulates the "living" layers of the dermis to produce more collagen and elastin, effectively making the skin thicker, stronger, and more resilient over time.

Yes, but with caution. Living in Tampa means year-round sun. You must be diligent about using a high-quality SPF 30+ and avoid direct sun exposure for at least 2 weeks post-treatment to protect the new, vulnerable skin cells.

You don’t have to decide alone! During your consultation, our skin experts will perform a comprehensive analysis. We match the peel’s acid concentration (Salicylic, Lactic, Retinol, or TCA) to your specific concerns; whether that’s active acne, deep wrinkles, or sensitive-skin redness.

Most patients feel a warm or tingling sensation for about 3–5 minutes during application. We use cooling fans and neutralizing techniques to ensure the sensation remains manageable and brief.

Side effects of a chemical peel can include redness, swelling, and skin crusting. These side effects are usually temporary and often resolve on their own within a few days. In rare cases, more serious side effects may occur, including infection or scarring.

If you are not interested in a chemical peel, there are other options to improve your skin's appearance. These options include microneedling, dermal fillers, or our signature facials. Talk to Dr. Stan Castor and his team about which choice may be right for you.

After you get a chemical peel, you will need to protect your skin from the sun. You should also avoid using harsh cleansers or soaps on the skin and avoid rubbing it after washing; pat it dry instead. Use a gentle cleanser and be sure to apply a moisturizer to your skin. If you need other topical products on the skin to facilitate faster healing and protect it, Dr. Stan Castor of Artisan Aesthetics Plastic Surgery will advise or provide these creams.
